Tamko Ridge Vent Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Tamko-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Orange County, with most complete ridge vent replacements running $850 – $1,600 installed depending on roof length, pitch, and existing decking condition. The part is usually in our warehouse, and we can typically get a crew out within a few days once you approve the written estimate. Most Orange County homeowners discover a ridge vent problem the hard way: a ceiling stain near an exterior wall, a musty attic smell in August, or granules collecting in the gutter after a Santa Ana wind event. Your ridge vent is the roof’s exhaust system, and when it fails, heat and moisture have nowhere to go but down.
If you’re seeing attic dampness or rising cooling bills in Irvine, Mission Viejo, or Laguna Niguel, the ridge vent is often the silent culprit. We’ll walk you through exactly what to check, what it costs to fix, and why the Tamko part on your roof may or may not be the right replacement today.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko makes two primary ridge vent lines that show up on Orange County homes: the Tamko Proline Ridge Vent and the Tamko Roll Vent. The Proline is a rigid, pre-formed plastic vent that runs along the peak and gets covered with shingle caps. The Roll Vent comes in a 20-foot roll and is a lower-profile option often used on roofs where the ridge line is highly visible from the street.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Tamko ridge vents have changed their profile dimensions over the years, and a Proline vent purchased in 2012 may not interlock cleanly with a Proline section manufactured in 2024. The nail slots don’t always line up, and the shingle-overhang reveal can end up uneven. That’s why we always pull an existing section and match measurements before ordering new material. If your original vent is discontinued or dimensionally off, we’ll tell you that on the estimate and quote a full-run replacement rather than a patch that will look wrong from day one.
As an independent roofing contractor, Tilehurst Roofing Orange County is not affiliated with Tamko, but we work with their products daily alongside GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. That means you get an honest recommendation about whether the Tamko part is still the best fit for your roof, or whether another manufacturer’s vent profile matches your existing shingle lines more cleanly.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Tamko Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat you can feel through the ceiling. When a ridge vent clogs or collapses, attic temperatures in Orange County can climb past 140°F in July and August. That heat presses down through your insulation and makes your air conditioner work harder than it should. The cause is usually crushed vent baffles or debris blocking the air channel.
- Water staining near exterior walls or at the ridge line. Ridge vents fail at the end caps and where sections join. Driving rain from a coastal storm in Laguna Beach or Newport Beach can push sideways into those gaps, leaving water trails that follow rafter lines downward. By the time you see the stain, the leak has usually been active for weeks.
- Shingle granules washing into gutters directly below the peak. Ridge cap shingles take more UV abuse than any other shingle on the roof because they sit at the highest point with no shade. When those cap shingles break down, granules shed first. If you’re seeing more granules near the ridge than elsewhere, the caps over your vent are nearing the end.
- Visible cracking or warping on the vent edges. California sun is hard on plastic ridge vents. After 10 to 15 years, the vent edges can warp upward, breaking the seal with the shingle caps and exposing the air channel. From the street or with binoculars, look for sections that appear raised or uneven along the peak.
- Birds or rodents getting into the attic. A cracked or dislodged ridge vent is an open door. We’ve pulled nests out of vent channels in Rancho Santa Margarita and Anaheim Hills more times than we care to count. If you hear scratching at dawn, check the ridge line first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orange County, a full Tamko ridge vent replacement on a standard single-story home with 30 to 45 linear feet of ridge line typically runs $850 – $1,600 installed. That includes removing the old vent and cap shingles, inspecting and replacing any rotted decking along the ridge cut, installing the new vent, sealing the end caps, and installing new ridge cap shingles to match your roof. Longer ridge lines, steeper pitches, two-story access, or roofs with multiple peaks push toward the higher end.
Our written estimate breaks the job into three line items: materials, labor, and disposal. You’ll see the exact vent product we’re quoting, the number of linear feet, and the cap shingle color we’re matching. Nothing appears later as a surprise. Every ridge vent replacement carries our written repair guarantee, and if the vent leaks or fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, and leave the place cleaner than we found it.
DIY or Call Us?
A ridge vent replacement is a roof-peak job, which means ladder work at height, cutting decking, and nailing shingles on an exposed ridgeline. One wrong step on a 6/12 pitch in Trabuco Canyon and you’re in the hospital. We recommend against DIY on this one, and not because we want the work. The failure points on a ridge vent are subtle: the shingle overlap has to be right, the end caps have to be sealed properly, and the air channel has to remain continuous without gaps. We’ve repaired too many homeowner installations where the vent looked fine from the curb but leaked at the first hard rain.
What you can check safely from the ground or a stable ladder: look for uneven or raised vent sections, missing cap shingles, and granule accumulation in gutters near the peak. If any of those are present, call us at (559) 295-5445 for a written estimate. Greg Holloway walks every job site before he quotes it, and you’ll get a straight number before any work begins. You get the price before we touch a shingle. That’s how it starts, and that’s how we stay.
FAQs
A properly installed Tamko ridge vent typically lasts 12 to 18 years in Orange County before the plastic warps or the cap shingles fail. Coastal salt air in Dana Point and San Clemente can accelerate cap shingle breakdown by a few years, while inland heat in Anaheim and Santa Ana wears down the plastic vent itself. If your vent is past 12 years and you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, it’s time for a real inspection rather than a patch. Call (559) 295-5445 and we’ll take a look, no charge for the estimate.
Sometimes, yes. If the damage is limited to a single end cap or one section of vent, we can typically repair it for $250 – $450 depending on access and how much shingle rework is needed. But if the vent is warped in multiple sections or the cap shingles are shedding granules across the full ridge line, a patch will fail within a year or two, and you’ll pay twice. Our written estimate will show you both options with real numbers so you can decide with the facts in front of you.
Most ridge vent replacements in Orange County are completed in one day. A standard single-story home with 30 to 45 feet of ridge line takes our crew about 4 to 6 hours including tear-off, decking inspection, installation, and cleanup. Two-story homes or roofs with multiple ridge lines may stretch into a second morning. We’ll tell you the exact timeline in your written estimate, and we show up in the window we promised.
We keep Tamko Proline and Roll Vent sections in stock at our Orange County warehouse, along with matching Tamko ridge cap shingles in the most common colors. If your roof requires a color or profile we don’t carry, we can usually have it from a local supplier within 48 hours. During your estimate, we’ll confirm exactly which vent your roof needs and whether the material is on the truck or on order before we schedule the work.
