Boral Shingle Repair: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
Boral shingle repair in Orange County typically runs $450 – $1,100 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and what’s going on underneath them. We stock Boral-compatible shingle profiles on our trucks and can usually match your existing roof the same week we look at it. Most Orange County homeowners discover the problem the same way: a shingle in the driveway after a Santa Ana wind event, a dark water stain on the ceiling after a winter rain, or a neighbor pointing out that a section of the roof looks “off” from the street. Boral makes a dense, stone-coated product that holds up well here, but no shingle survives forever against our sun, our wind, and our occasional sideways rain.
Tilehurst Roofing Orange County is an independent roofing contractor. We’re not affiliated with Boral, but we’ve worked with their shingle profiles for years and we keep the common profiles in stock.
Which Boral Models This Applies To
Boral’s residential shingle line in Orange County mostly comes down to the Boral Steel Pine Shake and the Boral Tile (also marketed as Inspire and, in earlier years, Gerard) stone-coated steel profiles. The Pine Shake is a steel shingle stamped to look like cedar shake. The Roof Tile profile mimics flat concrete tile. Both are common on newer tracts from Irvine to Rancho Santa Margarita, and both use the same general repair approach: remove the damaged shingle, check the batten and underlayment, install the replacement, and reseal the fasteners.
Identifying your exact profile matters more than most people expect. The Pine Shake comes in different shake widths, and the stone-coat granule color differs between runs even on the same model. If we’re matching a repair on an 8-year-old roof, a factory-fresh shingle can look slightly different. That’s not a defect; it’s sun fading on the surrounding shingles. We tell Orange County homeowners this before we write the quote so there are no surprises when the new shingle goes in. For OEM versus aftermarket: Boral profiles are specific enough that we recommend OEM stock. Aftermarket options exist, but the granule match and the profile stamp rarely line up well enough for a repair that will be looked at every day from the curb.

Signs Your Boral Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Shingles in the yard or driveway after a wind event. Boral shingles are heavy, so one in the driveway means a mechanical failure, not a light breeze. Usually it’s a corroded fastener or a broken batten underneath. If you find one shingle, two more are often loose nearby.
- Granule loss that looks like dark sand in your gutters. Boral’s stone coating protects the steel core. Orange County’s UV load will eventually chip granules off, especially on west and south-facing slopes. When the steel starts showing through, water will find it eventually.
- Rust streaks running down the roof slope. This is the one we want homeowners to catch early. The steel core is galvanized, but once the stone coat and the galvanizing wear through, the shingle will rust through in a season or two. A rust streak is a countdown, not a cosmetic issue.
- Water staining on ceilings near exterior walls. A failed shingle rarely causes a leak at the exact spot it sits. Water travels along the underlayment and drips where the roof meets the wall. The shingle that needs replacing may be several feet upslope from the stain.
- Visible lifting or curling at the shingle edges. Most Boral profiles interlock. When the interlock fails, the edges lift and wind starts getting under them. Once wind gets under a shingle, it works the fasteners out faster than you’d think. We see it constantly in the foothill communities where evening winds come off the canyons.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a single-shingle or small-section Boral repair in Orange County, expect to pay:
- Single shingle replacement: $450 – $650
- Small section (3 – 6 shingles with underlayment repair): $650 – $900
- Larger section with batten replacement: $900 – $1,100
- Full underlayment or decking repair underneath: add $200 – $500 depending on what we find
The range depends on roof pitch, number of stories, and how much of the underlayment has degraded. On steeper two-story homes in places like Laguna Niguel, the labor goes up because safety setup takes longer. The quote you get is the quote you pay. No change orders, no “we found extra damage once we opened it up and now it’s more” unless you approved the additional work in writing first. Every Boral repair comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that repair fails inside the year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The guarantee is on paper before the crew leaves your driveway.
DIY or Call Us?
What a homeowner can safely do: get up on a ladder, look at the damaged area, and check the gutters for granules. That’s genuinely useful information. What we don’t recommend is walking a pitched roof to replace a stone-coated steel shingle yourself. Boral profiles interlock with the shingles around them. If you don’t release the interlock in the right order, you can kink the adjacent shingles and turn a $500 repair into a $1,500 one. Also, the shingles are load-bearing only where the battens run underneath. Step between battens and you can crease the steel, which isn’t covered by any warranty we know of.
Falls from roofs kill more people each year than most people realize, and most happen on “quick” jobs. If it’s a single shingle in a walkable spot and you’re comfortable on ladders, it’s your roof and you’re welcome to try. If it’s anything taller than a single story or steeper than a 6/12 pitch, call us at (559) 295-5445 and let us put it on the written quote. We walk the roof before we price it, and we give you the number before we touch a shingle. That’s how it starts, and that’s how we stay.
FAQs
Boral stone-coated steel shingles typically last 30 – 50 years in Orange County, though the coating warranty often runs shorter. Our sun is the variable: south and west-facing slopes take a beating and may show granule loss 10 – 15 years in. Most of the Boral repairs we do are on roofs in that 10 – 20 year age range, and the problem is usually granule and fastener wear rather than failure of the steel itself. Call (559) 295-5445 if you want us to look at your specific roof and give you a straight assessment.
A single damaged Boral shingle can usually be repaired without replacing the section, as long as the underlayment below it is still intact. The process is removing the damaged shingle, checking the batten, installing the replacement, and resealing fasteners. We’ll tell you honestly whether the surrounding shingles are in good enough shape to leave alone. Call (559) 295-5445 for a free estimate and we’ll walk the roof before we quote.
A typical single-shingle or small-section Boral repair takes 2 – 4 hours on site, including setup, sealant curing, and cleanup. Larger sections with batten work might run most of a day. We schedule a specific arrival window, and we’re not done until the roof is clean and the guarantee is in your hand.
We keep the common Boral profiles and colors in our local stock, especially the ones we see most often here: the Pine Shake in weathered gray and the Tile profile in terra cotta tones. If your profile is less common or the color run is older, we’ll order it and give you the lead time before you sign anything. Along with Boral, we also stock parts for GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. You call a live human, and we tell you when we can be there.
